Our baby is a dark green 1966 Galaxie 500/XL fastback with a 427 engine. We purchased it from the 4th registered owner in September of 1998. It was a completely unrestored numbers matching car. We are in the process of restoring it (it's in lots of pieces right now.)
It was built in October,1965, and sold in Chicago. The original owner kept the car for about 8 years before selling it to a friend who kept it until late 1981. The next owners, who lived in Wisconsin, showed the car at the Columbus Ohio All Ford Show in 1984, and the IOLA Car show in 1982. They wrote an article about it which was in the September 1984 issue of the Ford Enthusiast Magazine.
The next registered owner purchased the car in early 1986 and drove it from Wisconsin to Indianapolis. There he kept it for 12 years, driving it less than one thousand miles.
According to information received from the Automotive Assembly Division of Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan, this car is
1 of 49 Galaxie 500/XLs which had 427 engines installed. This number includes hardtops and convertibles. The total of 427s put in full size fords in 1966 was 231. The other breakdown is as follows: Galaxie 500 2-door hardtops--102; LTD 2-door hardtops--7; 7-Litre hardtops and convertibles--38;
Custom 500 4-door--6; and Custom 4-door--29.
